What is Stellar?

  • June 22, 2020

You don’t always hear about successful cryptocurrencies in the news; you usually notice the famous ones, such as bitcoin. Yet some currencies perform even better but are left under the radar, like Stellar. If you’re new to cryptocurrency, then you may be asking, what is Stellar? Stellar is a payment protocol that provides the fast transfer of money across borders. Stellar is the platform, but there’s also a currency attached, which is called Lumens. However, other digital currencies are accepted on the platform.

Stellar is open source and driven by the community, and has been hugely successful; the price rose by some 40,000% in the space of one year, which is off the charts. It continues to hold well and has a company valuation of around $7.5 billion. The more you read about Stellar, the more you’ll realize that some aspects overlap with Ripple. That should come as no surprise since the founder of Stellar was also the co-founder of Ripple.

Fortunately, Stella is well and truly its own beast. Ripple looks for partners within the existing banking system, but Stellar looks at emerging markets. Perhaps one of the most useful things about Stellar is that it offers quick cross-border transactions much faster than traditional banks. Whereas some currencies get their valuation from their potential, Stellar has been shown to provide real-world use.
